"Ah, Holy Jesus," 2024

And he was crucified. - Luke 24:20 GNT

The lyrics to "Ah, Holy Jesus" were first penned in 1630. These 394 years later, the words give voice to the Christian's heart amidst the Paschal Triduum. Verses one and five are today's prayer. Listen to all five verses here.

Prayer

"Ah, Holy Jesus, how hast thou offended,

That man to judge thee hath in hate pretended?

By foes derided, by thine own rejected,

O most afflicted.

Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee,

I do adore thee, and will ever pray thee,

Think on thy pity and thy love unswerving,

Not my deserving.

Amen."

(vs. 1,5, "Ah, Holy Jesus," Heermann, 1630; Tr. Bridges, 1899)

Quote

"The Cross possesses such power and strength that, whether they will or not, it attracts, draws, and ravishes those who carry it." // Bl. Henry Suso

Reflection

Do you count yourself amongst "those who carry it"? In what way does the Cross's power and strength attract, draw, and ravish you?
