Maine Musings #3: Shared Sights
Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. — Proverbs 4:25 RSV

Different individuals. Different ages. Different thoughts. Different backgrounds. Yet all are facing the same direction, looking toward the Light. By keeping their eyes on the common focal point, they exist in a single-minded unity.
If they were to spend too much time comparing themselves to one another or gossiping amongst themselves, they wouldn't all be turned the same way. Instead, they are seated on the same bench in quiet harmony, together facing the Light.
When we sit together, facing Christ, we find ourselves drawn into a deeper communion than we could ever create on our own.
Lord, you are the Light of life. Let us together face and seek the sight and truth of You.
For where there are many men together, and each one is looking after his own interest, the group would be broken up and scattered, unless there were also someone to take care of what appertains to the common weal. We would soon be in a position to support the greatest misfortunes that can happen to us, besides at the same time insensibly drawing close to intimate union with God. — St Thomas Acquinas, The Governance of Rulers, I. I., (13th century)
