Yet as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last, He will take His stand on the earth. Job 19:25 NASB

In 1859, French priest Pierre Marie Bos arrived on the coast of Brazil. While ministering in Rio de Janeiro, he dreamed of building an image of Jesus on one of the tall hills overlooking the city. His idea materialized eighty years later and today Cristo de Redentor Christ the Redeemer is listed among the wonders of the modern world. Brazilians affectionately call him "Cristo."

Today we begin a "Cristo" series to mark this sacred time where we await and then celebrate the Reason for the Season—Jesus Christ—Redeemer of the world. As Christians, we also are reminded to continually look to and hope for our Redeemer's second coming as well when at the last, He will take His stand on the earth.

The photos in this series were taken during my recent visit to Brazil.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, we look up to You and adore You.

Quote

Through his strength I wait with certain expectation believing with unwavering hope that... I shall be saved by the Lord's mighty hand and... that I will see the Lord himself in his mercy and compassion and receive the legacy of heaven.

//St. Gregory of Narek (951 1003 A.D.)

Thought

The word redemption comes from the Latin "redemptio" which translates: "to buy back" or "restore." Our Redeemer, Jesus, is our restorer.

The Open Doors Podcast Advent series has begun! In Week One, we reflect on the difference between hope and optimism, drawing from this past Sunday’s scripture readings in Isaiah, Romans, Thessalonians, and the Gospel call to “stay awake.”
