Half Truth, Whole Lie

Half truth:

“You will not surely die,” the serpent told her. “For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

- Genesis 3:4,5 RSV

Whole truth:

So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

- Genesis 3:23 RSV

Thus all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.

- Genesis 5:5 RSV

Lord, help us to discern the many voices we hear and recognize when a half truth is at play. Enable us to believe Your words, even when they seem outdated. And if we should fail, allow us to learn from our mistakes and seek you within the twilight zone of our own consequences. Meet us here, now, Lord Jesus.
